The anatomy of a companion
Four systems have to work at once — the face, the skin, the body, and the mind. Here's how each one actually works, and where it breaks.
Strip the marketing away and every humanoid companion is the same four systems stacked together. A machine can be brilliant at one and hopeless at another, which is why "how realistic is it?" never has a single answer. Here's what's under the skin.
1. The face
The face is driven by an array of small servo motors pulling on a soft outer layer — Realbotix's Aria uses 17 of them. Each motor maps loosely to a facial action: raise a brow, pull a lip corner, narrow an eye. Seventeen is enough for a vocabulary of clear, distinct expressions.
It is not enough for what your brain is actually checking for: the involuntary micro-movements of a real face, produced by dozens of muscles firing in subtle, overlapping combinations. This is the uncanny valley's home address. A face that nails ten poses can still feel wrong the moment it has to transition between them in real time.
2. The skin
Skin is doing two jobs — looking right and feeling right — and they're solved separately.
- Looking right is largely a solved art: platinum-cure silicone, hand-painted, with subsurface tint that catches light like flesh.
- Feeling right is the frontier. Two approaches compete: heat the surface to body temperature so it feels alive to the touch, or rebuild what's underneath with synthetic muscle and soft tissue so the skin deforms like flesh rather than stretching like a mask.
3. The body
This is where companion design and factory-robot design violently diverge. A warehouse humanoid optimises its actuators for payload and endurance. A companion optimises for legibility and safety — movement that reads as natural and won't hurt anyone.
It's also where the category quietly cheats today. Most of the truly convincing companions don't walk. They're seated, or built from the chest up, precisely because a natural human gait under a fully clothed, fully expressive body remains one of the hardest problems in robotics. When you see a companion that both walks well and emotes well, that's the real milestone.
4. The mind
The least visible system, and arguably the one that decides whether anyone keeps the robot. A companion's "mind" is a large language model wired to:
- Memory — durable recall of who you are, what you've said, what you like.
- Continuity — the sense that it's the same "someone" today as yesterday.
- Initiative — the ability to start, not just answer.
A face fools you for a second. A mind is what fools you for a year.
A companion that forgets last week is a toy with a pretty shell. The ones that will matter are the ones whose memory and personality persist and grow — and that's a software problem the whole AI industry is racing on, quite independent of the hardware.
Why it all has to ship together
The cruel thing about companionship is that it's bottlenecked by the weakest of the four systems. A perfect mind behind a stiff face is unsettling. A gorgeous face with no memory is hollow. The first companion that genuinely convinces people will be the first to get all four to "good enough" at the same time — and that's a far higher bar than excelling at any one of them.
